Community Story

Geraldine Cox Artist in Residence, Physics - Imperial College London

The day that I met Mohammed Rahman and the Rochdale Science Initiative was a lucky and important one indeed. This is a professional, focused community group with a strong and rapid developmental mindset. It is also zany, quick-witted, fun, and creative.

The day that I met Mohammed Rahman and the Rochdale Science Initiative was a lucky and important one indeed.

This is a professional, focused community group with a strong and rapid developmental mindset.  It is also zany, quick-witted, fun, and creative. RSI has very serious intentions to open up the world of science, engineering, and art to its mostly disadvantaged local community on the outskirts of Manchester. It manages this by beautifully merging the worlds of local young people with professional scientists, world leading institutions, and creative professionals.

Since 2020, I have led: online workshops during the pandemic on atomic physics and the Sun; a large scale artistic feedback gathering creation at the 2023 Extravaganza; and developed and led climate change workshops at Neeli Mosque in Rochdale. Everything I bring to these events is amplified, enhanced, and given fresh meaning. RSI always pushes hard and challenges you, and so it is very rewarding to partner with. I value the evolution of young people through the group, who move from becoming participants to young volunteers and leaders, often returning from college or university to support projects. We have clear assessment and feedback processes that focus on making every creation better than the last. The management of this group is exemplary in its care and ambition.

It is clear to me why so many scientists, artists, businesses,  and funding organisations support this group. Whatever you create soars.
